What to notice in the examples

A strong face description gives the reader a few distinctive, observable details that fit the viewpoint, distance, lighting, and scene. It avoids stereotyping personality from facial structure and uses expression as contextual evidence rather than a mind-reading shortcut.

  • Choose two or three features that distinguish this face in this scene.
  • Separate stable features from temporary expression or condition.
  • Use asymmetry, movement, light, scars, lines, grooming, or expression when relevant.
  • Let viewpoint determine what gets noticed first.
  • Avoid beauty-ranking language unless it belongs deliberately to the viewpoint character.
  • Do not infer race, morality, intelligence, or health from facial features alone.

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Selective introduction

Introduce a supervisor at close range.

A pale scar cuts through one eyebrow, and the repaired arm of the glasses sits slightly higher on that side. The rest of the face stays undescribed until expression matters.

Why it works: Two connected features create recognition without an inventory.

Worked example 2Expression as action

Handle an uncomfortable question.

The mouth opens, closes, and the jaw shifts once before the answer comes. The viewpoint reports the visible sequence instead of labeling the hidden emotion.

Why it works: Expression becomes an action beat rather than a diagnosis.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Inventory → selection

Starting material: She had brown eyes, a small nose, pink lips, and a round face.

Decisions
Keep only details that help recognition or the current beat.

Result: A pale scar through one eyebrow and the repaired glasses arm make her recognizable before she speaks.

Transformation 2Emotion label → visible sequence

Starting material: His face was furious.

Decisions
Show the physical change that the viewpoint can observe.

Result: His mouth tightens, the jaw shifts once, and he sets the cup down before answering.

Depth by level

Increase the reasoning, not just the word count

LevelWhat changesQuality test
ObservationChoose a few visible, audible, tactile, or movement details that the viewpoint can actually notice.Specific observation should replace feature inventories and personality shortcuts.
Context & inferenceSeparate what is observed from what the narrator merely assumes about emotion, temperament, honesty, health, age, or character.Description becomes more credible when behavior and appearance remain contextual.
Narrative functionLet the detail support recognition, action, relationship, mood, orientation, continuity, or consequence.A description earns space when removing it would make the scene less clear or less meaningful.
