What to notice in the examples

A strong heaven description first decides what kind of work the setting is doing: faith-informed representation, invented fantasy cosmology, symbolic afterlife, dreamlike vision, satire, allegory, or another fictional form. Sensory detail, landscape, architecture, inhabitants, time, memory, identity, rules, and symbolism should follow that premise. When borrowing from a living religious tradition, writers should research that tradition directly and label invention as invention.

  • Define whether the realm is invented, tradition-informed, symbolic, visionary, or deliberately ambiguous.
  • If using a real religion or culture, research primary or authoritative sources rather than blending traditions casually.
  • Choose a small set of setting rules for light, space, time, bodies, memory, communication, or movement.
  • Use sensory language according to the viewpoint; an ineffable setting can still be rendered through selective comparisons and limits.
  • Let architecture, landscape, community, ritual, or silence reflect the story’s themes without claiming universal theology.
  • Distinguish what a character believes about heaven from what the narrative has actually established as true in the fictional world.

Worked example 1Invented afterlife

Fantasy scene

There was no gate. Sela arrived in a library where every shelf held one memory instead of one book. The room was silent until she touched a spine labeled with her brother’s handwriting; then both of them heard the kitchen where the memory had begun.

Why it works: The realm is explicitly invented and governed by a clear memory rule. Concrete setting and relationship carry the emotional work instead of generic perfection language.

Worked example 2Tradition-informed boundary

Narrative method

The chapter names the character’s religious tradition before using imagery drawn from it. Source-supported elements remain tied to that tradition; later additions—the river that shows remembered homes and the guide who changes age—are signaled by the narration as part of the novel’s invented cosmology.

Why it works: The example separates research-based representation from author-created worldbuilding, reducing the risk of presenting a hybrid invention as a universal account of a real belief.

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Generic perfection → concrete invented realm

Starting material: Heaven was perfect, peaceful, bright, and beautiful.

Decisions
Choose the story’s cosmological frame, add one spatial rule and one relational detail, and let beauty emerge from specifics.

Result: The city had no visible sun, but every courtyard held the same early-morning light. Mara recognized the place only when she heard her father repairing a radio in a room that had not existed a moment before.

Transformation 2Universal claim → bounded representation

Starting material: Heaven has pearly gates and angels exactly like this.

Decisions
Name whether the imagery belongs to a particular tradition or to the novel’s invention; avoid presenting one depiction as universal religious fact.

Result: In the character’s tradition, the chapter draws on verified source-based imagery. The novel then marks its own additions—the mirrored river and changing city—as invented features of this fictional afterlife.

LevelWhat changesQuality test
Fictional premiseDefine whether the realm is invented, symbolic, ambiguous, or informed by a named tradition. The narrative frame is clear enough that invention is not presented as universal religious fact.
World coherenceDevelop selective rules for place, light, time, identity, memory, inhabitants, relationship, and movement. The setting feels inhabitable and internally consistent rather than a list of abstract beauty words.
Cultural / thematic depthWhen real traditions are referenced, verify them and keep borrowed imagery in context; let the realm serve the story’s themes and characters.Research, invention, character belief, and narrative fact remain distinguishable.
