What to notice in the examples

A strong multi-location scene treats movement as part of the scene rather than a series of unexplained teleports. The reader can identify the current location, what changed during the transition, how much travel matters, and why the next place creates a new opportunity, constraint, audience, or consequence.

  • Establish a clear starting location and scene objective.
  • Give each move a cause: pursuit, task, conversation, deadline, discovery, or deliberate choice.
  • Use concise transition evidence such as route, transport, elapsed time, weather, carried objects, or changed sound rather than repetitive arrival announcements.
  • Preserve viewpoint and character positions unless a shift is clearly marked.
  • Let each location alter what is possible instead of functioning as interchangeable scenery.
  • Distinguish a continuous multi-location scene from simultaneous parallel scenes that occur in different places at the same time.
Worked format lab

See complete reasoning, not just isolated lines

Use these fuller examples to see what changes between a recognizable pattern and a finished piece of writing. The examples are original or explicitly illustrative, so they demonstrate structure without inventing real-world evidence.

Worked example 1Movement with continuity

Move an argument through three places.

The discussion began beside the printer, shifted to the stairwell when coworkers arrived, and continued on the sidewalk only because the taxi was already waiting. The same unsigned form stayed in Mina’s hand, so the route, privacy change, and deadline remained connected.

Why it works: Cause every move and carry one anchor.

Worked example 2Compress the travel

Skip an unimportant drive.

He left the clinic with the envelope sealed. When he reached the apartment, the coffee in the cup holder was cold and the local bulletin had moved from noon headlines to traffic. The envelope was still unopened.

Why it works: Show only the travel evidence the scene needs.

Prompt → finished structure

See the decisions between the assignment and the final form

These transformations make the hidden planning step visible so the template does not become a fill-in-the-blanks substitute for judgment.

Transformation 1Teleport → caused transition

Starting material: They were in the office. Then they were at the station.

Decisions
Show why they move and one evidence cue of transit.

Result: They leave when the office closes; the next beat opens on the station platform with the same file and ten minutes left before departure.

Transformation 2New place, same function → consequence

Starting material: The scene changes location only for variety.

Decisions
Make the new place alter privacy, route, audience, or options.

Result: The sidewalk removes the coworkers who constrained the conversation but adds the waiting taxi deadline.

Depth by level

Increase the reasoning, not just the word count

LevelWhat changesQuality test
Scene architectureClarify the objective, sequence, location logic, and cause-and-effect chain. The reader should understand why each beat follows the previous one.
Continuity & progressionTrack time, place, information, character positions, and what actually changes across the sequence.Complexity should increase story movement without increasing confusion.
Revision depthRemove repetitive beats, generic speed/transition language, and decorative locations that do not alter choices.Every retained beat should improve orientation, progression, or consequence.

The argument began in the kitchen, continued down the stairwell because neither wanted the neighbors to hear, and changed again outside when the waiting taxi made delay expensive.

2
Editor picks

A detective left the office with one question, crossed the archive with a borrowed file, and reached the interview room with a narrower version of the same question.

3
Editor picks

The character moved from platform to carriage to station exit while one phone call continued, so each location changed noise, privacy, and available choices.

4
Editor picks

A storm forced the hikers from the ridge to the shelter; the route itself explained why the second location felt safer but more crowded.

5
Editor picks

The scene skipped most of the drive and used the cooling coffee in the cup holder plus the changed radio bulletin to show time had passed.

6
Editor picks

A child carried the same permission form from classroom to office to pickup lane, making the paper a continuity anchor across school locations.

7
Editor picks

The couple left the reception hall for the parking area because the next part of the conversation could not remain public.

8
Editor picks

The chase crossed three locations, but every move was caused by a blocked route or new decision rather than arbitrary spectacle.

9
Editor picks

A hospital sequence moved from waiting room to consultation room to discharge desk, with each place changing who could speak and what decision was possible.

10
Editor picks

The final location mattered because it removed the audience that had shaped the earlier conversation.
