What to notice in the examples

A strong parking-lot description prioritizes orientation and pedestrian/vehicle conflict points. It shows where characters can safely walk, what blocks sightlines, how levels or rows are identified, and how time, weather, lighting, or traffic changes the setting.

  • Establish entrance/exit, lane direction, rows or levels, and pedestrian routes.
  • Use signs, markings, pillars, ramps, lights, barriers, and vehicles as orientation anchors.
  • Track sightlines honestly; parked vehicles can hide parts of the scene but should not teleport characters.
  • Distinguish outdoor lots from parking structures.
  • Avoid implying unsafe crossing behavior as routine.
  • Research access/payment systems and local road conventions when the plot depends on them.

Worked example 1Night orientation without cliché

Write a tense parking-lot scene.

Blue row signs remained visible above the parked cars, and the store entrance glowed beyond the cart return. A van blocked the direct sightline to the crosswalk but not the lane. The character knew where the exit was even when part of the view disappeared.

Why it works: Preserve geography while using partial visibility.

Describe a character returning to a car.

She left the lift lobby on level four and followed the numbered pillars toward row D. Headlights swept the wall before a car turned into the aisle, so she paused at the pedestrian crossing rather than stepping into traffic blindly.
