What to notice in the examples

A strong staircase description keeps elevation and direction coherent. The reader knows where the character starts, which landing or turn changes visibility, what can be heard above or below, and how width, traffic, light, or carrying objects changes movement.

  • Establish start floor, destination, flight direction, landing/turns, and exit.
  • Use railing, wall, window, material, light, and sound as orientation anchors.
  • Track who is above/below and whether a landing changes sightlines.
  • Account for width, opposing traffic, carried objects, fatigue, injury, or accessibility only when relevant.
  • Avoid impossible shortcuts between floors.
  • Research unusual/historic stair design if the geometry matters.
