Character Backstory Template 1
Past → present chain Past event/condition: [ ] Character interpretation then: [ ] Present belief/skill/obligation: [ ] Current behavior affected: [ ] Relationship affected: [ ]
Start with structure, then replace every placeholder with information that is true, relevant, and natural for your context. These templates are intentionally skeletal so your final writing does not sound mass-produced.
Strong Character Backstory creates present consequences rather than a biography dump. The historical facts are internally coherent, the causal link to current behavior is plausible rather than deterministic, and each reveal arrives when it changes interpretation, decision, relationship or stakes. A full Flashback is used only when the past event itself needs scene-level action.
